Safe T Cert
- Safe-T-Cert is a third party accredited health and safety management system which is recognised throughout Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and GB.
The Scheme certifies the health and safety management systems of contractors and construction related companies working in the construction industry.
The aim is to assist companies of all sizes within the construction industry to continuously improve their health and safety management systems through an annual audit process to ensure they:
- – meet relevant national legislative requirements
- – meet the basic requirements for competence and training
- – demonstrate the implementation and operation of an occupational health and safety management system
- – demonstrate commitment at all levels within the organisation
It was developed from the OHAS 18001 documentation but enhanced specifically for the construction industry. It is based on ‘best practice’ requirements for international and national bodies.
Safe-T-Cert is recognised under the ‘Buildsafe’ initiative in Northern Ireland and the ‘Construction Safety Partnership’ in the Republic of Ireland. Safe-T-Cert is also a member of Safety Schemes in Procurement (SIP).

Your application will be processed, and a letter confirming Registration will be issued, along with information on the audit criteria.
You will then as a registered company, be required to apply for an audit within nine months of registration. Before applying for an audit, you should ensure that your health and safety management systems are ready to be audited and can demonstrate at least three months evidence of operation.
Upon receipt of the Application Form for Audit, the Scheme will appoint an auditor from its IOSH-approved auditor panel to conduct the audit. The appointed auditor will contact the applicant company directly to arrange a date for the audit. Continued Safe-T-Cert certification is subject to an annual verification audit. At an annual verification audit, you must demonstrate that your health and safety has improved and that all targets set at the previous audit have been implemented.

If you tender directly for public sector work, you are required to be accredited with a 3rd party Health and Safety Management System. Safe-T-Cert is one of the systems recognised by Government construction clients.
The Safe T Cert is an accreditation which may be awarded to a Company based on the quality of their Safety Management system.
It is awarded by the C.E.F.
It is recognised in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

One of the criteria currently sought, particularly in the Public sector is a Management system accredited by an external body.
One such standard to which you can have your safety management system accredited to is the Safe T Cert standard.
Safe-T-Cert certification involves passing an annual audit which is made up of 3 parts:
- Documentation audit- the company demonstrates they are managing their health and safety through a number of key documents including a health and safety policy, risk assessments and method statements, training records etc
- Management interview- the auditor will speak to senior staff e.g. Managing Director/Owner to ensure that health and safety is being managed from the top down and the senior team understand their role in relation to health and safety management within the company
- Site audit- the auditor will visit a site/sites to make sure that what has been noted in the documentation is actually happening on site.
The auditor prepares a report that lists opportunities for improvement and targets. These targets must be met by the next audit to demonstrate continuous improvement.
We will prepare all necessary documentation required to meet the Safe T Cert standard and have previously assisted many companies in obtaining the Safe T Cert.
It involves a safety adviser calling to your office in order to discuss with the Managing Director what will be done and obtain all necessary information for the compilation of documented Safety Management System in accordance with Safe-T-Cert requirements.
Timescale for obtaining Safe T Cert
Day 1.
Application to join the safe t cert scheme will be sent to the CEF at this stage.
Once this is done it will take approximately 8 working days to put together the management system and prepare the required folders which the client will use onsite. Also performed will be audits on the system to ensure that the system is ready for auditing by the Safe T Cert auditor.
